Starbucks is preparing to open its first corporate technology office in India, marking a major strategic shift for the coffee giant as it looks to strengthen in-house technology capabilities, reduce outsourcing dependence and cut global operational costs.
The new India hub is expected to begin operations during Starbucks’ fiscal year 2027, which starts in October 2026, according to internal communication first reported by Bloomberg and later cited by multiple publications. The company is currently finalising a location and is expected to begin hiring once the site is confirmed later this year.
Importantly, this will be Starbucks’ first dedicated corporate office in India outside of its retail business operations, which currently run through the 50:50 joint venture between Tata Consumer Products and Starbucks under Tata Starbucks.
The office will primarily focus on technology and engineering functions as Starbucks increasingly attempts to bring outsourced work back in-house. According to reports, the company is reversing parts of an earlier restructuring strategy that had moved several technology functions to third-party contractors.
In an internal message quoted in reports, Starbucks Chief Technology Officer Anand Varadarajan reportedly told employees that the company is focused on “reducing reliance on external service providers” and that “establishing a multi-site structure is a meaningful step toward that goal.”
The move comes at a time when Starbucks is undergoing one of its largest global restructuring exercises in recent years under CEO Brian Niccol. The company is targeting nearly $2 billion in cost savings through restructuring initiatives, workforce optimisation and operational changes.
Over the past year, Starbucks has cut more than 2,000 corporate jobs globally, including another 300 US-based support roles announced this week. Several regional offices in the United States are also being shut down as part of the company’s ongoing “Back to Starbucks” turnaround strategy.
The India expansion also follows Starbucks’ recent decision to move nearly 270 technology roles to a new office hub in Nashville, Tennessee, which is emerging as one of the company’s key operational centers in the United States.
