Bharat Petroleum has appointed Sanjay Khanna as its Chairman and Managing Director (CMD), effective April 9, 2026. Khanna, who was serving as Director Refineries, had also been holding additional charge as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) since May 1, 2025.
His formal appointment will continue until his superannuation on May 31, 2029, or until further orders. The company stated that Khanna is not related to any of its directors or key managerial personnel and is not barred from holding the position by any regulatory authority.
He brings over three decades of experience in refinery operations and technical services. Over his career, Khanna has worked across major refinery projects, including setting up process units at Mumbai, Kochi and Numaligarh refineries. He has also led both Kochi and Mumbai refineries in leadership roles.
As Executive Director at Kochi Refinery, he was involved in commissioning the Propylene Derivative Petrochemical Project during the pandemic period. He has also been associated with BPCL’s investment plans, including large scale refinery and petrochemical expansion projects.
In addition to his role at BPCL, Khanna serves on the boards of Bharat PetroResources, Petronet LNG and Ratnagiri Refinery and Petrochemicals. He also chairs the Technical Committee for Petroleum Refineries under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
