Zomato has introduced a new ‘Pay on Delivery’ fee for customers who choose to pay for their food orders at the doorstep using cash or QR code. The charge is set at 2% of the cart value, with a maximum limit of Rs 30.

The new fee appears separately on the order bill and is charged in addition to existing costs such as Zomato’s platform fee, restaurant packaging charges, delivery charges and applicable taxes. The platform fee is currently around Rs 14.90 before GST.

Customers who pay online through methods such as UPI or cards do not incur the additional Pay on Delivery charge. The new fee therefore applies specifically to orders where payment is made at the time of delivery.

Earlier customer bills showed different amounts being charged under the new fee, including Rs 5, Rs 7 and Rs 20. A bill reviewed by Business Today showed a Rs 21 charge on an order with an item value of Rs 850, equivalent to 2% of the order value.

Zomato has not publicly detailed whether factors other than the cart value influence the fee. The latest reported structure puts the charge at 2% of the cart value, subject to the Rs 30 maximum.

The surcharge comes as Zomato continues to process a large volume of food delivery orders. The company handled an estimated 270 million to 280 million food delivery orders between April and June, translating to roughly 2.9 million to 3.1 million orders per day.

Cash on delivery accounts for around 20% of Zomato’s total order volume. The introduction of a separate charge for this payment option creates an additional monetisation channel across a sizeable portion of its delivery orders.

Zomato’s move differs from rival Swiggy, which does not currently levy a separate fee for cash on delivery. At the same time, newer food delivery players have been positioning themselves around lower fees, adding to the changing pricing structure across India’s food delivery market.
