Mygate has introduced a carpooling feature that allows residents to find and coordinate shared rides with neighbours travelling on similar routes.
The feature is designed around residential communities, allowing users to create or discover rides based on their daily commute. Residents can set up recurring rides, add destinations, mention the number of available seats and leave additional details such as preferred pickup points or car information.
The company said the feature could also help reduce individual commuting costs and fuel consumption. According to Mygate, if 20% of its 5.7 million residents use the carpooling feature, it could potentially save around 18.2 crore litres of fuel annually. Based on current petrol prices in Bengaluru, this could translate into potential savings of around ₹2,020 crore a year.
Unlike conventional carpooling platforms that connect users with strangers, Mygate’s feature is restricted to residents within the same community. The company says this creates a more familiar setting for people looking to share their daily commute.
The feature was first tested across 50 communities during a 15-day pilot, which saw more than 4,000 users engage with the service. Mygate said feedback from the pilot highlighted convenience, familiarity with fellow residents and lower commuting costs as some of the key reasons for interest.
The wider rollout also comes as shared mobility receives greater attention as a way to address fuel consumption, congestion and emissions. Mygate said the feature is intended to make carpooling easier by connecting residents who already share similar routes and schedules.
Beyond commuting, the company sees the feature as a way for residents to interact with neighbours they may otherwise have limited opportunities to meet, particularly those travelling to similar workplaces or destinations.
Shreyans Daga, CPO and Co-founder, Mygate, said, “Carpooling has always made sense economically and environmentally, but trust has often been the missing piece. People are naturally more comfortable travelling with neighbours they already know than with complete strangers. Mygate already connects these communities digitally every day, so enabling trusted ride-sharing is a natural extension of our platform,”
He further added, “Recent government advisories encouraging citizens to reduce fuel consumption and use shared mobility reinforce the need for such solutions. By enabling residents to share rides exclusively with neighbours within their own communities, we’re making carpooling not just more convenient, but also more trusted and secure.”
