In a surprising move, Google has announced that it will shut down Firebase Studio, its AI-powered development workspace, less than a year after its launch. The Studio was introduced in April 2025 as a full-stack AI development environment, will officially be discontinued by March 2027 as part of the company’s broader strategy to consolidate its AI tools.
Firebase Studio was designed to help developers build, test, and deploy AI-driven applications within a unified environment. However, despite its ambitious positioning, Google has decided to sunset the platform and redirect its learnings into more central offerings like Google AI Studio and other emerging AI products.
Importantly, Google has clarified that this decision does not affect core Firebase services. Tools such as Cloud Firestore, Authentication, and App Hosting will continue to operate independently, ensuring that developers relying on Firebase’s backend infrastructure will not face disruptions.
Instead, the shutdown reflects a strategic realignment. By integrating Firebase Studio’s capabilities into its flagship AI platforms, Google aims to create a more streamlined, efficient, and scalable developer ecosystem. The company has already begun encouraging users to transition to newer platforms, including Google AI Studio and other AI-focused tools.
The fast-evolving AI landscape appears to have prompted Google to rethink its approach. Rather than maintaining multiple overlapping tools, the company is now focusing on fewer, more powerful AI platforms that can scale globally and integrate more deeply across its ecosystem.
