Meta Shifts To AI-Native ‘Pods’, Rebrands Employees As ‘AI Builders’ Amid Layoffs: Reports

Meta is reportedly restructuring its workforce by reorganising teams into smaller, AI-focused units while also carrying out layoffs across key divisions, according to media reports.

As per a media report by Business Insider, cited by multiple publications, the company has introduced a pilot programme within its Reality Labs division where employees are being reclassified as “AI builders” and grouped into smaller, cross-functional “pods.”

The restructuring is currently being tested within a team of around 1,000 employees working on developer tools. Under the new system, employees are assigned roles such as AI Builder, AI Pod Lead, or AI Org Lead, signalling a shift away from traditional job structures.

According to an internal memo referenced in the reports, these AI-native pods are designed to focus on specific outcomes rather than fixed roles, encouraging engineers and other team members to take on multiple responsibilities, including design and product functions.

The move is aimed at significantly improving engineering productivity and product quality by enabling tighter collaboration and faster execution within smaller teams.

However, the restructuring comes alongside layoffs. Reports indicate that Meta has cut hundreds of jobs across divisions, including Reality Labs, as part of its broader push towards efficiency and increased investment in artificial intelligence.

The layoffs are also linked to Meta’s rising expenditure on AI infrastructure and talent, with the company seeking to streamline operations and reduce costs while accelerating its AI ambitions.

This marks a continued strategic shift for Meta, which has been scaling back parts of its metaverse-focused Reality Labs division while doubling down on artificial intelligence as a core growth area.
