Swaminathan Subramanian has been appointed as Managing Director (MD) and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of SMBC Group India, where he will oversee operations and help drive the bank’s next phase of growth in the Indian market. The company announced the appointment through a post via LinkedIn.
Subramanian joined SMBC Group in May 2026 after serving at SMFG India Credit for more than five years across leadership roles. Most recently, he was Chief Operating Officer (COO) from April 2023 to May 2026, overseeing functions including credit underwriting, operations, legal, technology, cybersecurity, ESG, procurement, administration, human resources and customer service.
Previously, he served as Chief People Officer at SMFG India Credit from May 2021 to April 2023, leading human resources, enterprise services and CSR initiatives. Before joining SMFG India Credit, Subramanian worked at Sterlite Power as Group CHRO from July 2020 to May 2021 and at Reliance Capital as President and Group Chief People Officer from December 2017 to June 2020.
Earlier in his career, he held leadership roles at J.P. Morgan as Executive Director from September 2010 to May 2013, Barclays across emerging markets operations from April 2007 to August 2010 and Standard Chartered Bank as Head of Reward for South Asia from September 2002 to March 2007.
He also worked at Accenture as Manager from March 1998 to September 2002 and began his career as Graduate Engineer Trainee at Essar Projects and Reliance Industries between June 1995 and July 1996.
