Google has begun winding down Pixel Studio, its AI image generation app for Pixel smartphones, and is now steering users toward Gemini for image and animation creation. The shift marks a clear move away from a separate Pixel-only creative tool and toward a more unified Gemini-based experience across Google products.
Pixel Studio users are being redirected to Gemini
As first reported by 9to5Google, the change appears in ‘Pixel Studio version 2.3’, where users are reportedly prompted to create images and animations in the Gemini app. The update includes an Open Gemini button, and Google is encouraging users to use Nano Banana inside Gemini instead of relying on Pixel Studio as a standalone app.
Existing creations remain available in the app library, and users can still download earlier outputs while access remains available.
Pixel Studio first arrived in 2024 alongside the Pixel 9 series as a device-level showcase for on-device generative AI. It let users turn text prompts into images, stickers, and artwork directly on their phones, but the app appears to have had a relatively short run as Google reshapes its consumer AI portfolio.
What the change means for Pixel users
For Pixel owners, the practical impact is that image generation remains available, but it is no longer centered on the dedicated Pixel Studio app. Google appears to be folding those creative tools into Gemini, which now serves as the company’s broader hub for consumer AI features, including image creation.
The update also follows earlier signs that Pixel Studio was being scaled back. As Reports from earlier this year suggested, some users lost access to generative features in version 2.2, while device compatibility documentation was also reportedly narrowed to newer Pixel models. Taken together, those changes pointed to a gradual phaseout rather than a sudden removal.
Google has not given a detailed public shutdown timeline for Pixel Studio, but the latest update makes the app’s future as a standalone product look increasingly limited. The company’s broader direction is clear: Gemini is becoming the primary destination for its generative AI tools, and Pixel Studio is being absorbed into that larger ecosystem.
