Astrology is increasingly becoming a common reference point in modern dating, especially among younger singles who use zodiac signs to interpret compatibility, personality traits and relationship behaviour. From checking astrological matches before a first date to joking about Mercury retrograde after a breakup, astrology has become part of everyday dating conversations.
To explore this trend, Tinder took its Astrology Mode feature beyond the app through a series of street-style social experiments in Mumbai. The activation examined how astrology is used as a cultural tool in dating discussions and how it shapes the way people communicate about relationships.
The experiments featured creators such as Prannay Joshi and Jinal Modi, who examined how young users in India engage with astrology as a way to express themselves, assess compatibility and start conversations with potential matches.
The on-ground activations included interactions with an astrologer predicting romantic outcomes in a satirical format, discussions among strangers about zodiac ‘green flags’ and ‘red flags,’ and participants agreeing to date scenarios based solely on astrological compatibility.

According to Tinder’s Year in Swipe 2025 report, younger users are increasingly prioritising authenticity and emotional compatibility over surface-level attraction. Within this shift, astrology has become a shorthand for discussing personality traits and relationship expectations.
Tinder’s Astrology Mode allows users to display their Sun, Moon and Rising signs and view compatibility insights with potential matches. The feature reflects how astrology has moved from being a niche interest to a common reference point in dating culture.
Findings from Tinder’s Astro Awards, an in-app survey, suggest that users often associate zodiac signs with specific dating stereotypes and behaviours. The results show how astrology is used as a framework for discussing attraction, communication styles, and relationship dynamics.
Some of the associations highlighted in the survey include perceptions of Sagittarius as dependable partners, Leo as unpredictable communicators, Aries as impulsive romantics, and Cancer as emotionally attached individuals. Other signs were similarly mapped to commonly discussed dating traits, reflecting how users assign personality labels through astrology.
