Amazon is expanding its Health AI tool, an artificial intelligence assistant designed to help users better understand their medical information and connect with healthcare professionals. The company said the tool was developed by a team that includes a primary care physician with two decades of experience and a software systems engineer, and aims to address common patient frustrations such as long waiting times, confusing costs, and repetitive paperwork.
Amazon said Health AI functions as a personalised medical assistant capable of explaining laboratory results, medical records, and diagnoses while answering questions related to symptoms and medications. Users can ask the system to interpret cholesterol results, suggest dietary changes to prevent kidney stones, provide advice for congestion or sore throats, check whether allergy medicines are safe with current prescriptions, explain drug side effects, or connect them with a healthcare provider.
According to the company, the system is designed to support the relationship between patients and doctors, rather than replace it. When professional care is required, the AI can connect users directly with practitioners from One Medical through messaging, video consultations, or in-person appointments. Amazon added that the system can also assist with prescription renewals by sending requests to providers. It may also recommend relevant health products available on the Amazon platform.
To provide personalized responses, Amazon said users must allow Health AI to access parts of their medical history. The system can also consider relevant health related purchases made on Amazon. By combining this information, the AI can analyse symptoms in context.
Amazon said the tool is now being expanded to all customers in the United States via its main website and mobile application. Users can register through the Amazon Health page and will receive an email once access becomes available. To use the service, individuals must log into their Amazon Health profile using two step authentication before submitting questions through the chat interface.
The system operates on Amazon Bedrock, which allows it to use different AI models depending on the task. Amazon said the framework includes a core agent for patient communication, specialised sub agents for workflows, auditor agents that review conversations in real time, and sentinel agents that monitor the system and escalate complex cases to human healthcare providers for clinical review.
