Meta has begun testing a premium subscription model for Instagram, introducing a new layer of paid features aimed at everyday users.

According to media reports it will be called Instagram Plus, the subscription is currently being trialled in select markets, marking a significant step in Meta’s broader push to diversify revenue streams beyond its long-standing advertising model.

Unlike existing offerings such as Meta Verified which focuses on identity verification and creator support, the new subscription is expected to unlock exclusive, user-focused features designed to enhance everyday usage of the platform.

While Meta has not officially disclosed full details, reports suggest the premium tier could include:

  • Advanced account insights (like tracking non-followers)
  • Superlike Feature: Subscribers can send “Superlikes” on Stories and easily check if a specific user viewed their Story.
  • Expanded audience controls
  • Access to enhanced creative and AI-powered tools

This strategy also aligns with earlier announcements that Meta plans to roll out premium tiers across its ecosystem, including Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, offering tools that enhance productivity, creativity, and user control.

According to a report by TechCrunch, Instagram’s premium subscription is currently being tested in select markets including Mexico, Japan, and the Philippines, although Meta has not officially confirmed the full list. Pricing varies by region, with the plan reportedly costing around MX$39 per month in Mexico, ¥319 in Japan, and PHP 65 in the Philippines. The company may expand testing to additional markets as it evaluates user response and pricing strategies.
