Former Indian cricket star and Arjuna Awardee Shikhar Dhawan has been named the Brand Ambassador of the inaugural Delhi Khel Mahakumbh, a major multi-sport event launched by the Directorate of Education and Sports, Government of NCT of Delhi. The appointment, announced ahead of the month-long event beginning on 13 February, is aimed at energising grassroots sports participation and providing a structured platform for young athletes across the capital.
The Delhi Khel Mahakumbh has been conceived as a large-scale sporting festival that brings school and community-level competitors together across a range of disciplines, including basketball, football, athletics, kabaddi, wrestling, squash, and volleyball, with representation from all 12 districts of Delhi.
Expressing his gratitude for the role on X, Dhawan said he was “very grateful” to the Government and the Sports Directorate for the honour, and described the Mahakumbh as a “commendable step towards the growth of sport in the region,” which he finds rich with untapped potential. Drawing on his own experiences and his work with Da One Sports, he emphasised the importance of access to competition and exposure for young athletes. Dhawan said he hoped to motivate emerging talent to believe in themselves and help contribute to Delhi’s vision of becoming India’s sports capital.
