YouTube Changes Shorts Algorithm To Prioritise Original Content Over Reposts

YouTube is changing how Shorts reach viewers by prioritising original content over low-effort reposts, giving creators using commentary, storytelling and meaningful edits a better chance of gaining visibility.

YouTube is changing how its Shorts recommendation system treats reused content, with greater priority now being given to original videos. The platform says channels that mainly re-upload other creators’ videos without adding meaningful value could receive less distribution in the Shorts feed.

The change was announced by YouTube on October 1 and is aimed at making originality a stronger factor in deciding which Shorts get visibility. This means creators who have built channels around reposting viral clips may find it harder to get the same reach from content that is largely someone else’s work.

The update does not mean creators can no longer use clips from other videos. YouTube says reused material can still work when creators add something meaningful of their own, such as commentary, distinctive editing, storytelling or a clear point of view.

The bigger issue is low-effort repackaging. Minor technical changes, template-based edits or simply altering an existing video without adding a new creative layer are not what YouTube wants to reward. The platform is instead pushing creators to bring their own voice and interpretation to content they use.

This also does not amount to a ban on YouTube’s existing remix features. Creators can continue using eligible Shorts through tools such as sampling, Green Screen, templates and audio remixes. These formats can also direct viewers back to the original video, keeping the source creator connected to the content.

YouTube is making a distinction between recommendation and copyright. The new update changes how content may be distributed in the Shorts feed; it does not replace existing copyright rules. Videos uploaded without the necessary rights can still face Content ID claims or copyright takedowns.

For creators, the important change is therefore how much originality is built into the video. YouTube says its recommendation systems already consider billions of signals, including watch history, interests and engagement, but originality will now receive greater emphasis when deciding what content gets surfaced.

YouTube has also not said that every reposted Short will automatically lose reach. The update specifically targets channels that primarily aggregate or re-upload other creators’ videos without significant changes.

For creators relying heavily on viral clips, simply finding, downloading and repackaging someone else’s content may no longer be enough to earn distribution.
