OpenAI Acquires Promptfoo To Strengthen AI Safety Tools For Businesses

OpenAI has officially acquired Promptfoo, a company that develops safety tools for artificial intelligence. These tools help businesses identify and fix weaknesses in their AI systems while they are still being built. Following the acquisition, Promptfoo’s technology will be integrated into OpenAI Frontier, a platform where companies can build and manage AI powered digital agents to support everyday tasks.

According to the company, as more businesses begin using AI powered digital agents for real world tasks, ensuring safety and regulatory compliance has become increasingly important. It states that organisations need reliable systems to test how these AI tools behave before they are fully deployed. This approach helps identify potential risks early while also maintaining clear records to demonstrate that the systems are being monitored and operated in line with required safety standards.

The team at Promptfoo, led by Ian Webster and Michael D’Angelo, has built a widely trusted suite of AI safety tools. According to the company, these tools are already used by more than a quarter of the world’s largest enterprises. The team also developed an open source testing tool that many developers rely on to evaluate artificial intelligence systems. OpenAI said it will continue supporting this project while also integrating the team’s expertise to strengthen the safety capabilities of its enterprise platform.

As per the company, the collaboration will introduce three key safety capabilities within the Frontier workspace. First, automated safety checks will be integrated into the system to quickly detect issues such as data leaks or violations of company policies. Second, these checks will become a standard part of the development process, allowing teams to identify and address risks much earlier.

Finally, the system will help organisations maintain detailed records of safety testing, making it easier to track system behaviour over time and demonstrate compliance with evolving safety and regulatory standards.

Srinivas Narayanan, CTO of B2B Applications, OpenAI, said, “Promptfoo brings deep engineering expertise in evaluating, securing, and testing AI systems at enterprise scale. Their work helps businesses deploy secure and reliable AI applications, and we’re excited to bring these capabilities directly into Frontier.”

Ian Webster, Co-founder and CEO, Promptfoo, said, “We started Promptfoo because developers needed a practical way to secure AI systems. As AI agents become more connected to real data and systems, securing and validating them is more challenging and important than ever. Joining OpenAI lets us accelerate this work, bringing stronger security, safety, and governance capabilities to the teams building real-world AI systems.”
