Dropbox has announced a leadership transition that will see Ashraf Alkarmi become Co-CEO alongside founder Drew Houston. After a transition period, Alkarmi will take over as sole CEO, while Houston will move into the role of executive chairman. The company said the move reflects the stronger position the business has reached over the past year.

The company blog described Alkarmi as a key figure behind the strengthening of Dropbox’s core business, highlighting his role in making strategic decisions, improving operational focus and driving the company’s AI initiatives. The blog also stated that Dropbox’s business performance has been improving consistently over recent quarters as the company sharpens its long term product and growth priorities.

According to the company blog, Dropbox is now focusing more aggressively on customer needs, AI driven product innovation and improving workplace productivity experiences. The post further noted that the company has built a stronger operational foundation over the last year and a half, with clearer priorities, stronger execution and deeper focus on customer engagement shaping its next phase of growth

Alongside the leadership change, Dropbox announced that Mike Torres will join the company and its senior leadership team as chief product officer on July 7. Alkarmi said Torres brings experience from product leadership roles at Chrome, Kindle and OneDrive, and that the appointment will help strengthen the product organization as Dropbox pushes further into AI driven experiences. The company said it now serves more than 700 million global registered users.
