Vedanta invested more than $1 billion in net zero transition initiatives during FY26, with the spending focused on renewable energy, lower carbon fuels, energy efficiency and technology led decarbonisation measures. The company said the initiatives formed part of its broader effort to reduce emissions across its metals and mining operations.
The investment comes as Vedanta expands its use of renewable power across its operations. Renewable energy utilisation increased 52% year on year to 4 billion units in 2025 to 26, while the company’s installed and contracted renewable energy capacity reached nearly 2,000 MW.
Vedanta Renewable Energy Capacity Targets
Vedanta is targeting 2.5 GW of round the clock renewable energy capacity by 2030. The company’s wider climate roadmap also includes reducing absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2030 from its FY21 baseline and achieving net zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2050 or earlier.
The company’s renewable energy strategy includes power from solar and hybrid renewable projects, alongside measures aimed at improving energy efficiency and shifting operations towards lower carbon fuels. Vedanta has also identified hydrogen and other emerging technologies as part of its longer term decarbonisation roadmap.
Vedanta Emissions Reduction And India Renewable Energy Push
Vedanta said its decarbonisation measures helped avoid around 3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions during FY26. Greenhouse gas emissions intensity across its metals and mining production also declined by approximately 14% compared with the FY21 baseline.
The company’s renewable energy expansion is taking place alongside India’s broader clean energy targets. India aims to reach 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based power capacity by 2030, a transition expected to require higher investment in renewable generation, transmission networks, power grids, storage and electrification.
