Reliance Consumer Products Limited (RCPL), the FMCG arm of Reliance Industries Limited, has entered India’s competitive ice cream market with the launch of Bombay Creamery, adding another category to its expanding consumer-products portfolio.
The brand, launched on September 1, will initially be available across western India before being rolled out nationally. Its portfolio spans cones, cups, tubs, bars and sticks, with prices starting at Rs 10.
RCPL is positioning Bombay Creamery as an accessible premium dairy ice cream brand, with the company highlighting the use of genuine dairy ingredients, including real dairy cream.
The combination of a Rs 10 entry price and a dairy-led proposition places affordability and product quality at the centre of the brand’s positioning.
Bombay Creamery enters a category already populated by established players including Amul, Kwality Wall’s, Vadilal, Mother Dairy and Havmor.
The launch also follows Reliance’s broader expansion across FMCG. The company has been building its consumer business through brands such as Campa and Independence, using its distribution and retail infrastructure to enter established categories.
For Bombay Creamery, RCPL is expected to leverage the same distribution capabilities as it expands beyond western India. The company, however, has not disclosed specific investment figures or market-share targets for the ice cream business.
The starting price of ₹10 gives Bombay Creamery an entry point aimed at mass-market consumption, while its range of formats allows the brand to target different occasions and price points.
Reliance’s entry is significant for the category because of the scale of its retail and distribution network. Reuters noted that the company’s low-price strategy has previously played a role in its expansion in sectors such as telecom and beverages, including through Campa.
With Bombay Creamery, RCPL is now looking to replicate that consumer-market playbook in ice cream combining affordable pricing, broad distribution and a differentiated dairy proposition as it prepares for a nationwide rollout.
