10 Questions Every Brand Should Ask Before Hiring An Influencer In India
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Hiring an influencer can look deceptively simple. Find someone with a big following, check a few impressive engagement numbers, agree on a fee, and wait for the internet to do its thing.

But a million followers do not automatically translate into a million potential customers.

For brands in India, the real questions start much earlier. Is the audience actually relevant? Are the followers genuine? Has the creator worked with a competitor recently? Can the content be tracked, reused, and measured?

And perhaps most importantly, does the influencer understand the rules around paid partnerships?

Here are the 10 questions every brand should ask before hiring an influencer in India:

1. What are your audience demographics and tier city breakdown?

A creator may have an impressive follower count, but that number tells you very little about whether their audience is useful for your campaign.

Ask for audience data covering age, gender, location, and, where relevant, purchasing behaviour. For brands operating beyond the metros, the tier city breakdown is particularly important. A creator whose audience is concentrated in Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru may not be the right fit for a campaign targeting consumers in Jaipur, Lucknow, Indore or smaller cities.

The goal is simple: make sure the people watching the content are actually the people the brand wants to reach.

2. What is your authentic engagement rate and how much of your audience is genuine?

Follower count is one of the easiest influencer metrics to inflate, which makes it a poor standalone measure of influence.

Ask to see recent account analytics and look beyond the headline engagement rate. Check whether comments appear genuine, whether views are consistent across posts, and whether the account shows unusual spikes in followers or engagement.

A creator with 80,000 genuinely interested followers can sometimes be more valuable than one with 800,000 largely inactive followers.

3. Have you worked with any of our direct competitors in the last six months?

Nobody wants to see an influencer promoting Brand A on Monday and Brand B from the same category on Friday.

Ask about recent brand partnerships, particularly with direct competitors. This helps identify potential conflicts and gives the brand an opportunity to negotiate category exclusivity where it matters.

It is also worth checking the creator’s recent social media history rather than relying only on what they disclose. Previous partnerships can affect how credible a new endorsement feels to an audience.

4. Can you share performance data from your recent sponsored posts?

Do not stop at likes and follower counts.

Ask for campaign level performance data from recent paid collaborations. Depending on the campaign objective, this could include reach, impressions, video views, watch time, saves, shares, link clicks, click through rates and conversions.

For a sales campaign, a beautiful engagement number is nice. Actual clicks and purchases are considerably nicer.

5. How do you comply with ASCI guidelines for paid partnerships?

Influencer marketing in India comes with disclosure requirements, and brands should not treat them as an afterthought.

Ask the creator how they disclose sponsored content and whether they are familiar with the Advertising Standards Council of India guidelines. Paid or sponsored content needs to be clearly identifiable to consumers through appropriate disclosure labels, such as ‘Ad’ or ‘Sponsored’.

The brand should also agree on where and how the disclosure will appear before the content goes live. A tiny disclosure buried somewhere audiences are unlikely to notice defeats the purpose of transparent advertising.

6. Which languages and cultural contexts does your content work best in?

India is not a single audience, and speaking to a regional audience involves more than just translating a script.

Ask which languages the influencer regularly creates content in and which regions their audience is concentrated in. Also consider whether their humour, references, expressions and overall communication style make sense for the market being targeted.

A campaign designed for a Hindi-speaking audience in North India may need a very different cultural treatment from one targeting audiences in Tamil Nadu, Kerala or West Bengal.

7. What is your content creation and revision process?

Before approving the fee, establish exactly what happens between the brief and the final post.

Ask who handles the concept, scripting, filming and editing. Clarify whether the brand gets to review the script or rough cut, how many revision rounds are included and what happens if the final content does not follow the agreed brief.

This is where vague expectations can quickly turn into very specific headaches.

8. What usage rights and content ownership are included in your fee?

Paying for an influencer post does not automatically mean a brand can use that content everywhere.

Clarify whether the brand can repost the content on its own social channels, use it on its website, include it in marketing materials or turn it into paid advertising. Also establish how long those rights last and whether additional fees apply.

If the campaign involves creator-led advertising formats such as whitelisting or platform-specific creator ad permissions, those terms should be discussed before the campaign begins rather than after the content is already live.

9. How will we track the campaign?

If the campaign cannot be measured properly, it becomes difficult to know what the influencer actually delivered.

Depending on the objective, brands can use unique links, UTM parameters, creator-specific promo codes, affiliate links or dedicated landing pages to track activity.

For awareness campaigns, reach and video consumption may matter most. For performance campaigns, clicks, leads, purchases and revenue become much more important.

The tracking method should be agreed before publishing, not invented when someone asks for the campaign report.

10. What happens if the agreed deliverables or performance targets are not met?

Influencer campaigns can go off plan. A post can be delayed, a creator can miss a deliverable or content can perform significantly below the agreed baseline.

Ask what happens in each scenario before signing the agreement.

Clarify posting timelines, required formats, minimum deliverables, replacement posts, reshoots and any agreed remedies for missed obligations. If specific performance benchmarks are part of the commercial agreement, define exactly how they will be measured and over what period.

The clearer the expectations are at the beginning, the fewer surprises there are when the campaign report arrives.
