Amazon is pushing Alexa deeper into the generative AI era. The company has introduced a new feature called Alexa Podcasts, allowing users to generate personalized AI-created podcast episodes on virtually any topic through Alexa+.
The feature marks Amazon’s latest attempt to transform Alexa from a voice assistant into a full-fledged AI-powered content platform. Instead of simply answering queries or controlling smart-home devices, Alexa+ can now create conversational audio episodes narrated by AI-generated hosts, customized around topics users want to explore.
According to Amazon, users can ask Alexa+ to create a podcast episode around subjects ranging from history and sports to hobbies, news, music trends or educational explainers. Once prompted, the assistant generates an overview of what the AI hosts will discuss, while also allowing listeners to adjust the direction, tone and duration of the episode before it is produced.
Amazon demonstrated examples where AI-generated hosts discussed topics such as the Roman Empire, global music trends, the FIFA World Cup and even photography tutorials. The company is also positioning the feature as a learning tool, enabling users to generate audio lessons around subjects like the Apollo missions or other areas of personal interest.
Importantly, Amazon says the podcasts are not being generated in isolation. The system pulls information from more than 200 partnered news organizations and publishers, including Reuters, Associated Press, The Washington Post, Politico, Vox Media and several regional publications across the US.
For Amazon, however, the launch is part of a much larger Alexa+ strategy. Since rolling out the upgraded AI-powered Alexa assistant to US users earlier this year, the company has been steadily embedding generative AI across shopping, content discovery and conversational experiences.
The company has already introduced AI shopping assistants, conversational search tools and AI-generated product audio summaries inside Amazon’s ecosystem. Alexa Podcasts now extends that ambition into media and entertainment, turning Alexa into what increasingly resembles a personalized AI content companion rather than a utility-based assistant.
For now, Amazon appears focused on positioning Alexa Podcasts as a utility-driven feature designed for personalization and convenience. Once a generated episode is ready, users receive a notification through the Alexa app or Echo Show devices, where the audio can be played instantly. The feature is currently rolling out to Alexa+ users in the United States.
