CRED has found a rather unexpected person to explain a very real financial problem: Rakhi Sawant.
In its latest campaign, ‘Avoid Loan Stacking,’ the brand uses Sawant’s larger-than-life persona to break down what happens when one loan leads to another, and then another, until repayment starts chasing repayment.
The film opens with Sawant appearing to explain why she has ended up in a city instead of enjoying the ‘fresh mountain air of the Alps.’ The reason, she tells the audience, is a financial disaster.
Then comes the explanation.
One takes a loan. Repayment becomes difficult. So another loan is taken to clear the first one, including its interest. When that becomes difficult, a third loan enters the picture. Then a fourth.
That cycle is the point CRED wants viewers to understand.
Rather than explaining the concept through charts, percentages or the usual serious financial-advice format, the film lets Sawant narrate the situation with her trademark theatricality. The absurdity of the delivery contrasts with the fairly grim problem she is describing.
At one point, she gets into compound interest and how it can work beautifully when you are earning it, but become far less amusing when you are paying it.
And then comes the punchline-heavy description of where the cycle can eventually lead: a point of financial ruin.
The campaign works because the financial lesson remains easy to follow even while the presentation is deliberately ridiculous. Loan stacking is not explained as an abstract finance term; it is shown as a chain reaction where each new borrowing is used to deal with the previous one.
There is also a distinctly CRED-like approach to the subject here. The brand takes something that can be uncomfortable, dry and difficult to discuss, and packages it as entertainment first.
Rakhi Sawant is an especially interesting choice for that strategy. Her exaggerated delivery gives the film enough comic energy to hold attention, while the subject underneath remains serious.
The result is not exactly a conventional personal-finance explainer.
It is more like CRED taking a financial warning, handing it to Rakhi Sawant and letting her make the debt spiral dramatically entertaining.
And somewhere between the jokes, the Alps and the compound interest lecture, the message is fairly simple: Taking one loan to deal with another can quickly become its own problem.
