The McCann India campaign uses Gen Z slang, internet culture and CAPTCHA-inspired challenges to unlock exclusive fashion and beauty offers on Flipkart.
Flipkart is taking a playful approach to the question of who gets to claim Gen Z culture with its latest Big Billion Days campaign, ‘Are You Really Gen Z?’ Conceptualised in partnership with McCann India, the campaign turns the language, memes and cultural cues associated with Gen Z into a test that users must clear to access select fashion and beauty offers.
At the centre of the campaign is an observation about how brands and audiences increasingly borrow Gen Z expressions to appear relatable. Words such as rizz, cooked and no cap have moved into mainstream advertising and everyday conversations. Flipkart’s campaign uses this overuse as its creative premise, highlighting the awkwardness that can arise when Gen Z slang is forced into situations where it does not naturally belong.
The campaign film features a series of everyday situations where people and businesses attempt to use Gen Z language in an exaggerated or unsuitable manner. The reactions from the Gen Z characters are often marked by visible discomfort or ‘cringe’drive the humour.
Rather than simply adopting Gen Z’s language to sell products, Flipkart makes the act of imitation the subject of the campaign itself. The film then directs viewers to AreYouReallyGenZ.com, where users are asked to prove their cultural credentials before unlocking selected Big Billion Days offers.
The campaign extends beyond the film through an interactive website that reimagines the familiar CAPTCHA format. Instead of identifying traffic lights or buses, users encounter three challenges centred on Gen Z culture, fashion, beauty and internet behaviour.
Those who complete all three stages can unlock exclusive offers on Flipkart’s fashion and beauty trends. The format turns what is typically a routine online verification process into a playful test of cultural familiarity, while giving the campaign a functional connection to the shopping experience.
