Foodstories has introduced ‘The Autorickshaw Project’, an initiative that transforms autorickshaws in Bandra into moving canvases. Developed in collaboration with artists from across India, the project uses visual storytelling and mixed media to bring food inspired narratives and product stories to Mumbai’s streets.

As per the brand, the launch coincides with Foodstories’ expansion into Mumbai, with new stores in ‘Bandra’ and ‘Lokhandwala’, along with a dark store in ‘Powai’. Founded by sisters Avni Biyani and Ashni Biyani, the food and grocery retail platform marks their return to the city where they previously helped shape India’s gourmet food retail landscape through Foodhall.

The initiative draws inspiration from Bandra’s street culture and the role of autorickshaws in everyday city life. Through artwork displayed on the vehicles, the project connects food narratives with familiar urban experiences, from local cafés and neighbourhood food spots to daily commutes and spontaneous social gatherings.

The featured artworks present a range of themes. Artist Ankita Dsouza explores ingredients and their origins through illustrations inspired by products such as coffee infused pecans, Vietnamese purple cashews and Korean tissue bread. Sarah Kaushik brings a surreal approach, depicting food products in imaginative settings, including a hot sauce bottle imagined as a volcano and a wheel of Parmesan cheese transformed into furniture.

Other participating artists include Seema Surana, whose work reinterprets ingredients such as white asparagus and coffee through larger than life visual concepts, and Manvi Vakharia, who focuses on the agricultural ecosystems and processes behind heirloom tomatoes and adaptogenic mushrooms.

Avni Biyani, said, “The auto felt like the perfect metaphor for Mumbai itself – familiar, emotional, democratic, and constantly in motion. We loved the idea of taking ingredients and stories that usually live inside shelves and kitchens, and letting them travel through the city in a way that feels joyful and unexpected.”

She further added, “The project is really about making food feel cultural again, Not just something you consume, but something that sparks memory, curiosity, identity, and conversation.”
