Google has expanded Gemini in Chrome in India, bringing the AI assistant to Android users while also making its Auto Browse feature available on desktop and Android for Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscribers.
The expansion means Android users can now use Gemini directly within Chrome to interact with webpages without leaving the browser. Gemini can summarise lengthy articles, answer questions about the page being viewed and connect with Google services such as Calendar and Keep.
The bigger change, however, is Auto Browse.
Unlike a conventional AI assistant that primarily responds to prompts, Auto Browse is designed to carry out tasks across websites. Google says users can ask it to handle activities such as booking parking, completing lengthy forms or ordering groceries.
This moves Gemini in Chrome closer to an AI agent that can act on the web rather than simply provide information about it.
Google says Auto Browse is currently available in India on both desktop and Android, but access is limited to AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers. The feature is also currently restricted to devices set to English.
There are safeguards around how the feature operates. Google says its models are trained to identify threats such as prompt injection, while Auto Browse can ask users for confirmation before completing certain sensitive actions.
The Android version of Gemini in Chrome is initially available in US English and UK English, with Google saying additional languages will be added later.
The rollout is part of a wider shift in how Google is positioning Chrome. Instead of treating AI as a separate chatbot that users open when they need help, Google is putting Gemini inside the browser where much of the actual work happens.
