Google is exploring the possibility of establishing a major technology hub in West Bengal as part of its broader India expansion strategy focused on artificial intelligence, cloud infrastructure and advanced technology ecosystems. The discussions are reportedly taking place with the Union government and West Bengal authorities.
According to reports, Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently held meetings with Google representatives and state officials regarding potential investments linked to technology infrastructure and digital ecosystem development in the state.
The proposed technology hub is expected to focus on sectors including digital infrastructure, cloud computing, artificial intelligence and data driven technologies. While no formal investment announcement has been made yet, the discussions are being viewed as a significant development for eastern India’s technology ecosystem.
The development comes as Google continues exploring broader investments in India’s AI and electronics ecosystem. Earlier this month, Ashwini Vaishnaw said, “Google is exploring investments in India across AI infrastructure and the manufacturing of servers and drones.”
According to reports, a Google backed project in West Bengal could help diversify India’s technology landscape beyond established hubs such as Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune. Industry observers believe the proposed hub could support skilled employment generation, startup growth and expansion of cloud and AI infrastructure in eastern India.
The discussions also align with the Centre’s broader strategy to strengthen domestic AI infrastructure and attract global technology investments into newer regions. Reports indicate that West Bengal has been attempting to position itself as a larger destination for technology and industrial investments through infrastructure projects and policy support.
The proposal currently remains under discussion, with no official confirmation yet from Google or the government regarding final approvals, investment commitments or launch timelines.
