The Board of InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo) has appointed William Walsh as the company’s new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), subject to regulatory approvals. He is expected to take charge by August 3, 2026, after completing his tenure at International Air Transport Association (IATA) on July 31, 2026.

In his upcoming role at IndiGo, Walsh will be tasked with the overall management and strategic direction of the airline. His primary focus will involve leading transformational initiatives designed to improve operational performance and expand the company’s network and commercial strategy.

Furthermore, he will work alongside the Board and the existing leadership team to enhance the customer experience as the airline enters its next phase of growth. His appointment is seen as a move to strengthen IndiGo’s position as a major player in the international aviation market.

Walsh currently serves as the Director General of IATA and boasts an extensive leadership background in the global aviation sector. His previous high-profile roles include serving as the CEO of British Airways and later the CEO of International Airlines Group (IAG), the holding company for major carriers such as Aer Lingus, Iberia, and Vueling.

His career in aviation began as a pilot before he transitioned into executive management, serving as the COO and then CEO of Aer Lingus between 2000 and 2005. This was followed by a six-year term as CEO of British Airways and nearly a decade leading IAG. Since 2021, he has been at the helm of IATA, representing the interests of the global airline industry.

Vikram Singh Mehta, IndiGo’s Chairman, said, “I am thrilled that Willie will be at the helm of IndiGo. He is an exceptional global aviation leader with a stellar track record of outstanding leadership across several airlines. His experience in managing large scale airline operations and navigating complex market dynamics make him ideally suited to strengthen and lead IndiGo for continued growth in an ever evolving and competitive international aviation environment. His appointment will mark a new chapter for IndiGo, as it continues its journey in one of the fastest growing aviation markets in the world.”

Rahul Bhatia, Managing Director of IndiGo, said, “As we enter a new phase of transformation and growth, I am delighted to welcome Willie to IndiGo. He is an iconic and accomplished aviation leader and brings a rare combination of global perspective, operational expertise of having built strong customer-focused airlines, deep industry experience and a values driven leadership, making him exceptionally suited to lead IndiGo at this pivotal cusp of growth.”

Commenting on his appointment William Walsh, said, “I am delighted to have the opportunity to lead IndiGo. The airline has a strong foundation, a compelling vision and an exceptional reputation. What stands out most to me are its people, their passion, professionalism and commitment. The aviation landscape is evolving rapidly, and IndiGo is extremely well-positioned to be at the forefront of this change. I look forward to partnering with colleagues across the organisation to build a culture of excellence, innovation, collaboration and sustainable value for all stakeholders.”
