Comedians Samay Raina and Sharon Verma have come under criticism after an exchange on India’s Got Latent Season 2 involved jokes about their regional backgrounds, including references to Kashmir, Kashmiri Pandits and Bihar.

The Jammu and Kashmir Peace Forum has objected to the remarks, saying the displacement and suffering of Kashmiri Pandits should not be reduced to humour.

The criticism comes shortly after the Supreme Court quashed criminal proceedings against Raina and four others in an earlier India’s Got Latent-related case concerning remarks about persons with disabilities. The court took note of their subsequent efforts to support awareness and activities for persons with disabilities while granting relief.

What Happened On India’s Got Latent

The exchange took place between Raina, a Kashmiri Pandit, and Verma, from Bihar. Verma reportedly made a remark about Raina being from Kashmir, following which Raina responded with a joke about Verma’s Bihari background and migration from the state for employment.

Verma then responded with a remark referring to leaving her state by choice, which was interpreted as a reference to the displacement of Kashmiri Pandits. The comment drew attention online and became the focus of criticism from the Jammu and Kashmir Peace Forum.

J&K Peace Forum Calls For Sensitivity

Satish Mahaldar, chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Peace Forum, said comedy can have freedom of expression but also carries responsibility, according to a Times of India report. He said Kashmir and Bihar should not be reduced to stereotypes and that the displacement of Kashmiri Pandits should not be treated as material for jokes or publicity.

Mahaldar also pointed to the community’s experience of displacement, separation from ancestral homes and the loss of a sense of belonging over more than three decades. He noted that Raina has previously spoken publicly about his family’s displacement and the trauma associated with leaving Kashmir.

The forum said it was not seeking censorship but greater sensitivity around such subjects. Mahaldar also cautioned against using the controversy to create hostility between Kashmiri Pandits and Kashmiri Muslims or between Kashmiris and Biharis, stressing that entire communities should not be judged based on the actions or remarks of individuals.
