OpenAI is in early discussions with investors about a potential new funding round that could value the company at around $1.2 trillion, according to the Financial Times. The discussions are still preliminary, and the final valuation could change as talks progress.

The potential funding round comes months after OpenAI raised $122 billion in March at a post-money valuation of $852 billion. The latest discussions were reportedly initiated by investors, rather than OpenAI, with the timing of any new raise linked to when the company decides to pursue its initial public offering.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has said the company will not go public in 2026, pushing the expected IPO timeline into 2027 or later. The company had confidentially filed its IPO prospectus in June, but the listing timeline has since been delayed.

OpenAI Revenue Growth And AI Spending Drive Fresh Capital Talks

The funding discussions come as OpenAI has reported stronger revenue growth following the release of its latest AI models. The Financial Times reported that OpenAI’s annualised revenue crossed $40 billion in August, with revenue rising 20% following the launch of GPT 5.6.

The company also continues to require significant capital for AI model development and computing infrastructure. OpenAI spent $34 billion last year, according to the Financial Times, while the company has said its March fundraising has left it with sufficient resources.

A new round would provide additional capital for continued model development and potentially give existing investors an opportunity to increase their holdings.

The discussions are also taking place against increasing competition from Anthropic. Anthropic reached a $965 billion post-money valuation in its latest funding round, while the company is also preparing for a potential IPO. OpenAI’s proposed valuation would therefore place the two AI companies at substantially higher private market valuations than earlier in the year.
