PayU has announced the integration of Apple Pay across its merchant network in India, bringing Apple’s contactless payment service to lakhs of merchants.
With the integration, customers can use Apple Pay to make payments at participating stores using an iPhone or Apple Watch. For in-store transactions, users can double-click the side button, authenticate using Face ID, Touch ID or their device passcode, and hold their device near a compatible payment terminal.
Apple Pay can be used across categories including grocery stores, pharmacies, restaurants, coffee shops, taxis and retail outlets.
According to PayU, the integration will also allow merchants using its unified checkout to offer Apple Pay as a payment option for online transactions, enabling customers to make purchases without repeatedly entering shipping and billing information.
“PayU is proud to bring Apple Pay to lakhs of Indian merchants, enabling a new era of secure and seamless authentication solutions for digital payments. Beyond introducing this world-class innovation to India, PayU will also empower merchants navigate complex technical integration and compliance processes, reinforcing its commitment to providing advanced digital financial solutions to its customers,” said Nikhil Mehta, Senior Vice President – Partnerships & Business Head – Growth Initiatives (Cross-Border Payments & Affordability), PayU.
He added that through PayU’s unified checkout, merchants can offer consumers a faster and more convenient payment option, with the company expecting this to support conversion rates and business growth.
Apple Pay uses device-based authentication and a unique dynamic security code for transactions. When a customer adds an eligible credit or debit card to Apple Wallet, the actual card number is not stored on the device or Apple’s servers and is not shared with merchants.
Instead, Apple assigns a unique Device Account Number, which is encrypted and stored in the device’s Secure Element.
Apple Pay can also be used on iPhone and iPad for purchases in apps and on the web through Safari, while support for Mac is expected to come soon.
Customers can set up the service through the Wallet app by selecting the ‘+’ option and following the steps to add an eligible card. Cardholders will continue to receive the rewards and benefits associated with their bank cards when using Apple Pay.
