Switching smartphones is usually presented as a technical decision: better camera, bigger display, faster processor or a new feature. Samsung is taking a different route.
In its latest campaign, ‘Switchers’, the brand puts the emotional baggage of moving from an iPhone to a Galaxy device on a therapist’s couch. Led by clinical psychologist Dr. Orna Guralnik, known for the television series Couples Therapy, the campaign treats smartphone switching like a relationship that needs to be talked through.
The campaign launched on September 14, shortly after Apple unveiled its latest iPhone lineup, including the foldable iPhone Duo. The timing places Samsung’s latest Galaxy campaign in the middle of heightened attention around smartphones and foldable devices.
Rather than relying on a conventional product comparison, Samsung uses the familiar setting of couples therapy to dramatise why people may hesitate to leave an ecosystem they have used for years.
The campaign features real-life pairs including Ciara Miller and Dylan Efron, Carl Schmidt and Aniya Harvey, and former NFL players Nick Foles and Clay Matthews. In the spots, one person is ready to make the switch while the other has reservations about leaving the iPhone ecosystem.
Their concerns range from losing photos and messages to the social awkwardness associated with green message bubbles. AirDrop, group chats and the perceived hassle of moving years of personal data also become part of the therapy sessions.
The result is less about comparing specifications and more about turning brand loyalty and switching friction into a cultural joke.
At the heart of the campaign is an insight Samsung says is often overlooked: people may stay with familiar technology because changing it feels harder than continuing with what they already know.
Importantly, the campaign does not stop at the joke. Each anxiety raised in the therapy sessions is connected to a Samsung feature designed to reduce the friction of switching.
Samsung points to Smart Switch, its data-transfer tool, which allows users moving from iOS or Android to Galaxy to transfer information such as contacts, photos, videos, messages, apps and settings. The company also highlights RCS messaging as a way to maintain richer communication between Android and iOS users.
The products featured include Samsung’s latest foldables Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Flip8 along with devices from the Galaxy S series.
