Spotify has reduced the prices of its Premium Standard and Student subscription plans in India while quietly discontinuing its entry-level Premium Lite tier, marking another major shift in the company’s evolving subscription strategy in one of its largest growth markets.
Under the revised pricing structure, Spotify Premium Standard will now cost Rs 139 per month, down from Rs 199, while the Student plan has been reduced from Rs 99 to Rs 69 per month. The Premium Platinum tier, which includes features such as lossless audio and AI-powered tools, continues to be priced at Rs 299 per month.
The move comes just months after Spotify introduced a revamped three-tier Premium structure in India in late 2025, which included Premium Lite, Premium Standard, and Premium Platinum plans. At the time, the company had positioned the tiered structure as a way to cater to different listening habits and user segments ranging from casual listeners to audiophiles.
However, Spotify has now removed the Premium Lite plan from both its website and mobile app in India. The Lite tier, priced at Rs 139 per month, had offered ad-free listening but lacked features such as offline downloads and high-quality streaming available in higher-tier plans.
Industry observers see the move as an attempt by Spotify to simplify its subscription offerings while making its full Premium experience more accessible to Indian users. By reducing the Standard plan to the same price previously occupied by Lite, Spotify appears to be encouraging users to move directly to its core Premium ecosystem rather than opting for stripped-down alternatives.
These revised plans currently apply only to new subscribers, while existing Spotify users will continue on their older subscription tiers unless they choose to switch or upgrade manually. Spotify’s legacy plans in India included Individual, Duo, and Family tiers, with pricing ranging between Rs 139 and Rs 229 per month.
The pricing revision also reflects the intense competition within India’s music streaming market, where platforms are increasingly experimenting with pricing, bundled subscriptions, regional content, and feature differentiation to drive paid user growth. India remains a highly price-sensitive market for subscription services, particularly in digital entertainment and streaming.
The company has also been expanding premium-focused features such as AI DJ, AI playlist creation, and lossless audio as part of its effort to differentiate paid subscriptions from free streaming experiences.
