India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has taken another step overseas, with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri saying that UPI is now active at several locations in France, including the Eiffel Tower and major international airports. He added that the network is expected to expand further in the coming weeks, marking a broader push for Indian digital payments in one of Europe’s most-visited destinations.

Eiffel Tower rollout grows into a wider French presence

The latest update builds on UPI’s earlier launch at the Eiffel Tower, which was formally introduced in February 2024 as part of India-France digital payments cooperation. At the time, the Indian Embassy in France and the Prime Minister’s Office described the move as a milestone in taking UPI global, with France becoming the first European country to adopt the system.

What was once a symbolic acceptance at a single iconic site is now being extended to additional high-footfall locations, especially airports serving international travelers. According to Misri, UPI is already available at several major airports in France, including the Eiffel Tower, suggesting the payment system is moving beyond pilot-style visibility and into practical, everyday use for visitors.

India-France digital payments cooperation gains momentum

The expansion also reflects the broader India-France effort to deepen digital and financial connectivity. The availability of UPI in France is particularly significant for Indian tourists, students, and business travelers who are already familiar with the system at home and can now use it in selected French locations without relying only on cards or cash.

For France, the rollout supports tourism convenience at a time when outbound travel from India remains an important market. For India, it adds another example of how UPI is being positioned as a cross-border payment tool rather than only a domestic system. The current expansion follows the original Eiffel Tower launch and signals a gradual widening of acceptance points across French travel and tourism hubs.

This development comes as India and France continue to discuss wider cooperation across technology, trade, and digital systems, with UPI emerging as one of the most visible examples of that partnership in action.
