Meta’s Next Smart Glasses May Go Camera-Free Amid Privacy Concerns: Report

Meta is reportedly preparing to launch a new pair of camera-free smart glasses, internally codenamed Luna, this fall. The move comes as the company faces growing scrutiny over privacy concerns surrounding camera-equipped smart glasses.

According to The Information, Luna is expected to feature six built-in microphones that will allow users to interact with Meta AI and the company’s recently introduced consumer AI agent, Muse. The glasses will also include speakers and a side button for quickly activating Meta AI.

The removal of the camera is also expected to give Luna slimmer temple arms, making the glasses look closer to conventional eyewear. The glasses are reportedly planned in two styles, Clubmaster and Burbank, with Meta targeting October for shipments.

Meta Luna Smart Glasses Focus On AI Without A Camera

Luna would offer voice-based access to Meta AI without relying on a camera for image or video capture. The microphones and speakers would allow users to communicate with Meta’s AI services while retaining the form factor of everyday glasses.

The camera-free design comes as Meta’s existing Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta glasses face concerns over their recording capabilities. Some users have reportedly modified or covered the recording indicator to capture people without their knowledge, prompting Meta to introduce software safeguards that disable recording when the indicator is blocked or tampered with.

Meta has said that less than 0.1% of its smart glasses have been tampered with, according to a statement from its vice president of wearables reported by Semafor. The company has also been facing broader scrutiny over privacy and the handling of data generated through its AI glasses.

Meta Expands Smart Glasses Lineup With AR Plans

The camera-free Luna glasses are expected to be part of a broader expansion of Meta’s wearable hardware strategy. The company is also reportedly preparing new augmented reality glasses, internally codenamed Phoenix, which could be unveiled at its upcoming Connect event.

Phoenix is designed to support productivity and entertainment features, including displaying a virtual computer workspace and watching films through the glasses. The device is expected to use a separate puck for power and is reportedly lighter than an earlier prototype, with improved battery life.
