The Supreme Court has imposed a cost of Rs 10 lakh on comedian Samay Raina in connection with proceedings related to India’s Got Latent controversy, observing that he allegedly made false statements before the court and failed to comply with its earlier directions. The court directed Raina to deposit the amount within two weeks, warning that coercive action could follow if he failed to do so.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice J V Mohana made the observations while hearing petitions linked to the India’s Got Latent controversy. During the hearing, the bench remarked, “You have taken the court for a ride,” while expressing dissatisfaction over Raina’s conduct.
The matter was heard alongside petitions involving content creators Ranveer Allahbadia and Ashish Chanchlani, as well as the Cure SMA Foundation.
The proceedings stem from allegations that remarks made during the show’s first season were insensitive towards people suffering from Spinal Muscular Atrophy and individuals with disabilities.
Court Questions Compliance With Earlier Directions
During the hearing, Senior Advocate Aparajita Singh told the court that Raina had not contacted the Cure SMA Foundation or individuals living with Spinal Muscular Atrophy despite earlier assurances given before the bench. She argued that the comedian had continued performing shows without complying with the court’s directions.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta also questioned Raina’s conduct, referring to one of his recent performances in which he allegedly appeared to make light of the ongoing legal proceedings. Mehta said he decided to raise the issue after learning that Raina had not followed the court’s directions regarding the foundation.
Appearing for Raina, his counsel told the court that the failure to contact the foundation was not driven by ego and assured the bench that efforts would be made to ensure compliance with its earlier directions. The court’s latest order marks another development in the legal proceedings arising from the India’s Got Latent controversy.
