India is encouraging Apple and its suppliers to expand component manufacturing in the country before the company increases assembly of products such as iPads, MacBooks and Apple Watches. The focus is on building a stronger domestic supplier base that can support both Indian manufacturing and exports.

India focuses on building Apple’s component ecosystem

According to Moneycontrol, the government’s strategy is to integrate India more deeply into Apple’s global supply chain by increasing production of components and sub assemblies. These parts can be exported to manufacturing hubs such as China and Vietnam, where they are incorporated into finished Apple products.

Indian suppliers are already manufacturing and exporting products including printed circuit board assemblies, mechanical components, housings, flex PCBAs, conductive graphite buttons, wires and packaging materials.

Companies including Foxconn, Tata Electronics, Pegatron, Motherson, Salcomp, Jabil, TRIL Bangalore, Aequs and Yuzhan Technology are among the suppliers involved in these exports.

Finished product assembly to follow

Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has indicated that Apple could expand its manufacturing footprint in India beyond iPhones.

However, officials said the immediate priority remains developing the supplier ecosystem, while any expansion into final assembly will depend on factors including market growth and Apple’s global sourcing strategy.

Mechanical components such as enclosures and casings are a key area of focus, alongside batteries, chargers, cables and other sub assemblies. The government is also using the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme to encourage higher local value addition and scale production for Apple and other global electronics companies.
