Dyson has entered the oral-care market with a new high-tech toothbrush that does something few conventional toothbrushes can: show users what is happening inside their mouths while they brush.
Called the Dyson CameraJet, the device features a built-in 100,000-pixel macro-lens camera that captures live footage of the user’s teeth and sends it to the MyDyson app. The toothbrush also uses machine learning to identify gaps between teeth and automatically direct a jet of mouthrinse towards those areas.
Unveiled by James Dyson in Paris on September 1, the CameraJet is the company’s first product in the dental-care category and comes after six years of research, development and engineering.
At the centre of the CameraJet is Dyson’s Gap Optical Targeting technology. The system uses the camera to analyse 28 live images every second, allowing the toothbrush to identify, track and predict gaps between teeth as it moves around the mouth. When it identifies a target, the device triggers a precision burst of mouthrinse.
The technology is designed to combine brushing and liquid flossing in a single routine.
The CameraJet’s camera also streams a live view of the user’s mouth to a connected smartphone through the MyDyson app. The app provides guided cleaning sessions, coverage mapping and feedback on brushing technique, effectively giving users a real-time view of areas that may otherwise be difficult to see while brushing.
Dyson says the machine-learning system behind Gap Optical Targeting was trained using 470,000 dental images gathered during the product’s development.
Rather than relying on users to separately floss after brushing, the CameraJet is designed to deliver targeted mouthrinse between teeth while the brushing process is underway.
The device features a 12.5ml mouthrinse reservoir and a system designed to maintain pressure regardless of how the toothbrush is positioned. Its jet can reportedly identify a gap and deliver the rinse within around 100 milliseconds.
Dyson has also incorporated its sonic brushing technology into the device, with the brush head designed to adapt its movement and angle as it moves across the teeth.
The company is introducing specially formulated, non-foaming toothpaste and mouthrinse alongside the toothbrush. The products are designed to maintain camera visibility during use, although the device can also work with other dental-care products.
Putting a camera inside a toothbrush naturally raises questions about privacy, particularly because the device connects to a smartphone and streams footage of the inside of a user’s mouth.
Dyson says the CameraJet does not store the images or video on the toothbrush or upload them to the cloud. The footage is intended to be viewed live during a cleaning session.
The company has also said the camera is activated only in specific circumstances, including when users are viewing the live feed through the MyDyson app or when the jet-flossing function is operating.
The Dyson CameraJet is priced at $499.99 in the US and £419.99 in the UK, placing it firmly in the premium segment of the electric toothbrush market. It is being offered in ceramic blue and ceramic pink variants.
The wider Dyson Dental System includes the CameraJet, charging dock, travel case, brush head and specially formulated oral-care products, depending on the market.
Dyson has not yet announced an India launch date or India-specific pricing for the CameraJet.
The CameraJet marks another expansion of Dyson’s engineering-led approach into a category traditionally dominated by established oral-care companies.
The company’s previous moves into personal care, particularly with products such as its hair dryers and styling devices, have similarly focused on combining hardware engineering with software and sensor technology.
With CameraJet, Dyson is taking that strategy a step further by turning an ordinary bathroom routine into a connected, camera-assisted and AI-guided experience. The bigger question, however, is whether consumers will consider those additional layers of technology worth the premium price.
