Maruti Suzuki India has said it will challenge a Raipur Consumer Court Order that asked the company to replace a customer’s Grand Vitara with a new E20-compatible vehicle. The dispute is tied to a complaint that the car developed issues after being refuelled with E20 petrol.
What the Raipur consumer court ordered
According to the order passed on July 14 by the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in Raipur, Maruti Suzuki was directed to either provide a replacement vehicle within 45 days or issue a full refund of Rs 20.5 lakh, including registration and insurance costs.
The complaint was filed by a Grand Vitara owner from Chhattisgarh who said the vehicle faced technical problems after using E20 fuel.
The case has drawn attention because it sits at the intersection of consumer grievance and the wider debate around ethanol-blended fuel in India. The order has also revived questions about how automakers, fuel quality, and vehicle compatibility are assessed when a dispute reaches a consumer forum.
Why Maruti Suzuki is contesting the ruling
Maruti Suzuki has said the vehicle in question was already E20 compatible and that this was disclosed in the owner’s manual. The company also said the car was manufactured in January 2023 and sold in June 2024, and that evidence of contamination was found in fuel collected from the customer’s vehicle.
The automaker further said several relevant facts were not reflected in the commission’s order and that it would take legal steps before the appropriate higher forum. Its position is that the problem was linked to fuel quality, not to the vehicle itself.
The dispute comes as E20 compatibility has become a broader industry talking point, with automakers saying certified vehicles are designed to run on fuel with up to 20% ethanol, provided the fuel meets prescribed quality standards. That makes the Raipur case one to watch for its possible implications on consumer complaints involving ethanol-blended petrol.
