Redcliffe Labs has partnered with Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace to study how diagnostic reagents perform in space. The collaboration will focus on the stability and reliability of dry diagnostic reagents exposed to low Earth orbit conditions.
The project brings together Redcliffe Labs’ expertise in diagnostics and Skyroot Aerospace’s capabilities in orbital missions. The companies said the collaboration aims to generate data on how diagnostic materials respond to conditions encountered beyond Earth.
Redcliffe Labs To Send Diagnostic Reagents Into Low Earth Orbit
The first mission, DRIFT 1, will carry Redcliffe Labs dry diagnostic reagents into low Earth orbit for 90 days. An identical set of samples will remain on Earth as a control, allowing researchers to compare the space-exposed reagents with those stored under ground conditions.
Researchers will assess the samples for changes in stability, performance, and reliability after their time in orbit. The comparison is expected to create a flight heritage dataset to understand how diagnostic materials behave in space environments.
The study is positioned around the practical challenge of conducting healthcare testing in environments where conventional laboratory infrastructure may not be available. The results could be relevant to astronaut health monitoring, microgravity research and point-of-care diagnostic systems for future human spaceflight missions.
Space Diagnostics Could Also Support Healthcare On Earth
The research could have applications beyond space missions if diagnostic materials can maintain their performance under harsh operating conditions. Redcliffe Labs said the findings may support diagnostic technologies designed for locations with limited laboratory infrastructure and restricted access to cold chain facilities.
The work also has relevance for future Indian human spaceflight programmes, including Gaganyaan and the proposed Bharatiya Antariksh Station. Diagnostic systems that can operate reliably in orbit could become part of healthcare infrastructure needed for longer-duration human missions.
