Swiggy Share Price Drops 2.6% As FSSAI Sends 9 Notices To Instamart Over Food Safety Concerns

Swiggy shares came under pressure in early trade on Monday, July 13, after the stock fell as much as 2.6% to Rs 266.13 on the NSE. The decline followed a regulatory action against Instamart, the company’s quick commerce arm, which has now become the key overhang for the stock.

Market reaction was immediate because the issue goes beyond a one day operational headline. For investors, any sign of regulatory scrutiny around food safety can raise questions on compliance systems, seller checks, and the quality controls behind a fast growing quick commerce business.

Why the stock is under pressure

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) said it issued nine notices to Swiggy Instamart after receiving multiple consumer complaints. The complaints alleged supply of expired, spoiled, rotten, contaminated and otherwise unsafe food products through the platform.

FSSAI also said it wanted a detailed explanation and a compliance report, warning that legal action could follow if concerns are not addressed.

The regulator’s concerns are important for the market because they point to more than one isolated complaint. FSSAI flagged issues around seller onboarding, compliance verification, traceability, food quality monitoring, grievance redressal, supervision of food business activity and the strength of food safety controls. That is why the share price reaction was sharper than a routine news driven dip.

What the 9 notices mean for Instamart and investors

The complaints involved products such as protein powder, snacks, eggs, and packaged foods that were allegedly expired, spoiled, damaged, or improperly stored. Some cases also pointed to incorrect licence details, while one complaint alleged that a previously returned product was supplied again. Swiggy Instamart said it is reviewing the flagged listings and is cooperating with the authorities.

For Swiggy, the immediate issue is sentiment. The company has been building Instamart as a major growth engine, but regulatory noise around food safety can weigh on investor confidence, especially when the stock is already being valued on future execution rather than just current profitability.
