Titan Company was established in 1984 as a joint venture between the Tata Group and the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO). What began as an effort to modernise India’s watch industry has evolved into one of the country’s largest lifestyle companies, with a portfolio spanning jewellery, watches, eyewear, fragrances, ethnic wear, and accessories.

Today, jewellery is Titan’s largest business, contributing more than 80% of its revenue through brands such as Tanishq, Zoya, Mia, and CaratLane. However, the company’s identity was built through its Watches & Wearables division, which produces over 15 million watches annually across brands including Titan, Fastrack, Sonata, Xylys, and Nebula.

Beyond watches and jewellery, Titan has expanded into several lifestyle categories. Titan Eye+ operates its eyewear business with prescription glasses, sunglasses, and frames, while newer ventures include Taneira for ethnic wear, SKINN fragrances, IRTH women’s bags, and Fastrack Bags.

Together, these businesses reflect Titan’s transformation from a watchmaker into a diversified lifestyle brand.

Four decades after its launch, Titan’s journey is also the story of how a single watch brand changed the way Indian consumers viewed watches, from functional products to personal expressions of style, aspiration, and identity.

The People Behind Titan, And Why They Chose Watches

Titan’s origin traces back to ‘Xerxes Desai’, a Tata Administrative Services executive who spent nearly two decades across Tata Chemicals and the Taj hotels before being asked by J.R.D. Tata to revive the loss-making Tata Press in the 1970s. While exploring new business opportunities, Desai identified India’s state-dominated watch industry, then focused on basic, functional timepieces with little emphasis on design or consumer appeal.

The idea initially faced resistance within the Tata Group, as watchmaking seemed far removed from its core businesses. J.R.D. Tata eventually backed the proposal, setting an ambitious vision with the words, “the finest watch in the world, totally made in India,” shifting the goal beyond import substitution.

Desai believed Indian consumers wanted watches that reflected milestones such as a first salary, graduation, promotion, or wedding, rather than simply telling time. Working with a small founding team that included ‘Bhaskar Bhat’, later Titan’s Managing Director (MD), and engineer ‘B.G. Dwarakanath’, he spent nearly a decade navigating License Raj approvals and industry opposition before the company took shape.

Titan Watches was incorporated in 1984 as a joint venture between the Tata Group and TIDCO, with manufacturing in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, and its corporate headquarters in Bangalore. Desai chose watches because quartz technology had made precision watchmaking affordable and scalable globally, creating an opportunity to introduce world-class quartz watches in India at a time when imported timepieces were the only aspirational option.

Watches & Wearables: The Business Behind the Brand

Titan Company owns and operates more than 15 watch and wearable brands across multiple price segments and consumer demographics through its Watches & Wearables Division. From affordable everyday timepieces to premium luxury watches and smart wearables, the portfolio is designed to cater to nearly every type of buyer.

Titan’s Watches & Wearables division isn’t one brand trying to serve everyone; it is a portfolio of brands built for different wallets, lifestyles, and occasions. Titan, the flagship name, sits in the middle: aspirational yet accessible, worn to weddings, interviews, and ordinary weekdays alike.

Sonata plays it straight and keeps it affordable for buyers who just want a dependable watch.

While Xylys and Nebula sit at the top, built around Swiss precision and precious metals for those chasing a status object rather than an accessory.

Before Titan, India’s watch shelves were ruled by the government-owned HMT, a brand built for function rather than feeling. When Titan entered the market in 1986 with quartz technology and a design-first approach, it did something HMT had never attempted: it treated a watch as a personal expression rather than a household utility.

That single shift in positioning, backed by Tata’s manufacturing credibility, is what allowed Titan to take over the organised watch segment within a decade of its launch.

The Marketing Playbook Behind Titan’s Watch Business

Titan’s advertising instincts were unusual for their time. The brand ran catalog-style print ads that functioned almost like product listings, letting buyers walk into a store with a newspaper clipping and point to the exact model they wanted.

It also built an entire advertising genre around gifting, releasing a set of three films in 1991 that tied watch-giving to personal milestones like a promotion, a wedding, or a quiet family moment, a theme that shaped Titan’s advertising for close to a decade.

One decision mattered more than any script: the choice of music. In 1987, Titan picked a segment of Mozart’s 25th Symphony as its advertising signature, a piece of Western classical music that had nothing to do with Indian watchmaking on paper but gave the brand an instantly recognisable, premium sonic identity.

That handful of seconds has outlived multiple rebrands and remains one of the most recognisable audio cues in Indian advertising history.

Titan was also early to celebrity endorsement in a market that hadn’t yet worked out its value, using faces like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Aamir Khan to build trust quickly rather than over the years. As the category matured, the company’s marketing logic shifted from selling one watch for life to selling multiple watches for multiple occasions.

A strategy that directly justified sub-brands like ‘Fastrack’ and ‘Raga’ instead of letting them compete with the parent brand.

Campaigns That Defined the Category

In 2004, Titan launched ‘What’s Your Style?’ with Aamir Khan as brand ambassador, repositioning the watch as a fashion accessory that could change with mood and outfit instead of staying fixed for years.

By 2008, the brand pushed further with ‘Be More,’ a rebrand backed by a red-and-white logo and a Piyush Pandey-led campaign that framed a Titan watch as a marker of personal reinvention rather than status. The timing was accidental but effective, since the campaign’s message of self-improvement landed just as the 2008 financial crisis made resilience-themed advertising resonate harder than usual.

Titan also built campaigns around emotions rather than products. Gift Well Given highlighted the thought and care behind meaningful gifting, positioning a Titan watch as a symbol of love, appreciation, and lasting memories instead of just a timepiece.

With Titan Raga’s #BreakTheBias campaign, the brand tackled workplace stereotypes by challenging the tendency to question a woman’s success instead of recognising her merit. Released for Women’s Day, the campaign reinforced Titan Raga’s commitment to celebrating women’s achievements and equality.

The Icons on India’s Wrists

Certain Titan products have outlived their launch campaigns, becoming category reference points. Titan Raga, the sensual, feminine watch line, has remained in the portfolio for decades as the brand’s answer for buyers seeking a slimmer, design-forward option.

Titan Edge built its reputation on being among the world’s slimmest watches, turning an engineering claim into a genuine talking point.

Titan Nebula continues to sit at the top of the range as the brand’s gold and precious-metal statement piece, while Fastrack’s digital and DTour ranges remain the entry point for teenagers buying their first proper watch. Sonata, despite its budget positioning, still moves volumes few competitors can match, which is really the point: Titan’s real strength lies in serving every rung of the Indian watch buyer at once, not just the ones who can afford to spend big.

BrandBeats’ Take

Four decades after its first quartz watch rolled out, Titan’s Watches & Wearables business still does something most legacy categories struggle with: it keeps reinventing without abandoning what worked. The same company that ran black-and-white catalog ads in the 1980s is now selling smartwatches under the same wearables umbrella, proof that the original bet on design and trust, not just accurate timekeeping, is still paying off.
