Anthropic has started adding invisible watermarks to text generated by its Claude AI models, making the content machine-detectable without changing how it looks or reads to users. The company says the watermark is designed to remain hidden from humans while allowing AI-generated content to be identified through detection tools.

The move applies to supported Claude models and extends across Claude’s products, including its API, Claude Code, Claude Cowork and Claude Tag. Anthropic is also applying provenance metadata to files processed through supported Claude products.

How Claude’s invisible watermark works

Unlike a traditional watermark that appears visibly on a document or image, Claude’s text watermark is embedded directly into the generated text. Users will not see any noticeable mark, and Anthropic says it does not change the meaning, quality or readability of the response.

The watermark is designed to travel with the text when it is copied and pasted and may survive some forms of editing. Anthropic has not yet disclosed the complete technical details of the system and is working on detection tools that could allow users and third parties to identify the embedded signal.

For files, Anthropic is using provenance metadata based on the C2PA standard, which can provide information about how digital content was created or processed. This gives AI-generated files a separate machine-readable trail in addition to the watermarking approach used for text.

Why Anthropic is watermarking Claude content

The timing is closely linked to the European Union’s AI Act. Transparency requirements covering AI-generated content became applicable on August 2, 2026, requiring providers to make synthetic content detectable in a machine-readable way.

Anthropic’s approach could make it easier for publishers, educators and other organisations to establish whether content originated from an AI model. At the same time, the company acknowledges that watermarking is not a perfect solution, as some forms of heavy editing, translation or other transformations can weaken or remove the signal.

For Claude users, the biggest change is therefore not something they will visibly notice. Instead, AI-generated text and files will increasingly carry hidden signals that could make their origin easier to establish as AI-generated content detection becomes more widespread.

FAQs

  • What is the Anthropic Claude watermark?

The Claude watermark is an invisible signal embedded in AI generated text that can help identify content created by Claude without changing how it looks or reads.

  • Does Claude add watermarks to AI generated text?

Yes. Anthropic has started adding invisible watermarks to text generated by supported Claude AI models.

  • Can people see the Claude AI watermark?

No. The watermark is designed to remain invisible to users while allowing detection tools to identify the embedded signal.

  • Can Claude watermarks be removed?

The watermark may become weaker or disappear after heavy editing, translation or other transformations, so it is not considered a foolproof method of AI content detection.
