Google’s Gemini app has crossed 1 billion monthly active users, marking a major milestone for the company’s generative AI push and making Gemini its fastest-growing product to reach the figure. Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced the milestone on August 11, highlighting the rapid adoption of the standalone Gemini app.

The figure refers specifically to users of the Gemini app, rather than the broader number of people interacting with Google’s AI features across products such as Search, Workspace and other services. The milestone puts Gemini at the billion-user scale alongside some of the world’s most widely used consumer technology products.

Gemini’s growth has accelerated considerably over the past year. The app had around 400 million monthly users in May 2025, before climbing to 650 million by October and 900 million by May 2026. It subsequently moved past 950 million in July before crossing the 1 billion mark in August.

According to data shared by Google, 63% of Gemini users interact with the assistant through voice, while a significant portion of interactions now involve multimodal capabilities such as screen sharing and live camera input. Gemini is also being used heavily for image generation, with the platform generating more than 150 million images every day, according to the company.

Gemini has also been increasingly integrated into Google’s wider ecosystem. The company has been embedding its AI models across products including Search, Android, Maps, Gmail and Workspace, allowing users to access AI capabilities within services they already use.

The 1 billion-user milestone also comes at a significant point in the competition between Google and OpenAI.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT has also crossed the 1 billion monthly-user mark, meaning the two AI assistants now operate at a similar scale. Gemini’s growth, however, has been particularly rapid, moving from hundreds of millions of monthly users to the billion mark in roughly 15 months.

The company has also been expanding Gemini’s capabilities through features that allow users to work with images, video, voice and their screens, making the product increasingly relevant to tasks beyond conventional question-and-answer interactions.

For Google, the milestone represents a significant shift in the role of AI within its consumer business. Gemini is no longer simply Google’s answer to the rise of ChatGPT; it is becoming a central interface through which users interact with Google’s broader ecosystem.

The company’s strategy has increasingly focused on making Gemini available wherever users already spend time, rather than requiring them to seek out a separate AI experience. That includes Android devices, Search, Workspace and other Google services.

The challenge now shifts from acquisition to sustaining engagement, improving the quality of AI interactions and turning massive usage into a durable business opportunity.

With Gemini now crossing the 1 billion monthly-user threshold, Google’s AI ambitions have moved firmly into the mainstream and the race to define what users expect from an everyday AI assistant is only getting more competitive.
