Spotify has positioned India as one of its most important growth markets as the company accelerates its AI powered global expansion strategy. During Spotify’s 2026 Investor Day in New York, the company highlighted India’s rapid subscriber growth and growing importance in its long term expansion plans driven by localisation, AI led personalisation and increasing digital consumption.
Spotify revealed that India is now among its largest markets by monthly active users, with subscriber numbers in the country growing sevenfold since its last Investor Day presentation. The company said this growth has been supported by culturally relevant campaigns, local partnerships and payment integrations tailored to Indian consumers.
The India growth story was highlighted as part of Spotify’s broader strategy around AI-powered media experiences. At the event, the company outlined its shift from recommendation and curation towards what it described as the ‘generation era,’ where AI helps create more interactive and personalised listening experiences based on user behaviour, context and intent.
Spotify said its proprietary Large Taste Model is central to this transition. Built on trillions of behavioural signals collected across music, podcasts and audiobooks, the AI-system is being used to improve discovery, personalise recommendations and create real time user experiences across global markets, including India.
During the Investor Day presentations, Spotify executives also showcased several AI driven products and features shaping the company’s next phase of growth. These included Prompted Playlists, Taste Profile, AI powered DJ interactions and Studio by Spotify Labs, a new tool designed to generate personalised audio experiences for users.
The company additionally outlined plans to expand monetisation through premium AI experiences, creator tools and interactive content formats. Spotify said generative AI will also play a growing role in music creation and fan engagement through licensed AI powered covers and remix tools developed in partnership with major music companies.
At the event, Spotify stated that it currently operates across 184 markets with 761 million active users globally, including nearly 300 million subscribers. The company said AI, localisation and interactive media experiences will continue to drive growth as it targets one billion subscribers in the future.
