Uber is expanding Uber Bike to 100 more cities in India, taking its presence to more than 220 cities. The move marks a broader push into smaller towns, where the company sees demand for affordable, convenient short-distance mobility.
The expansion covers 18 states and one Union Territory, with Uber Bike serving as the starting point in the newly added markets. The company expects shorter travel distances, congested roads, and demand from students, daily commuters, and other solo travellers to support bike taxi adoption.
Uber Sees Tier II And III Cities As The Next Growth Market
Uber’s focus on smaller cities is part of its broader effort to bring more users onto its platform beyond India’s larger urban markets. Rishant Ghosh, Director, Consumer & Growth, Uber India and South Asia, said the company views solving for “Bharat” and expansion markets as an important part of its next phase.
The company expects mobility needs in these markets to include work commutes, college and school travel, tuition trips and other short-distance journeys. Uber also sees a high proportion of solo travellers in these markets, making two-wheelers a practical option for everyday transportation.
For Uber, the strategy is not simply about adding more cities. The company wants to make its platform relevant to different consumer groups by offering multiple mobility options, including cars, autos and bikes, depending on what each market demands.
Regulatory Uncertainty Remains A Challenge For Bike Taxis
The expansion comes as bike taxi regulations remain unsettled in several Indian states, including Karnataka, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. Regulatory uncertainty has already affected the operation of bike taxis in some markets, making compliance an important consideration as Uber expands further.
Uber said it continues to work with governments while operating within applicable laws. The company has indicated that its approach will evolve alongside regulations in individual markets.
Uber is also keeping the door open for additional services in these cities. While Bike will be the initial offering, the company plans to assess local demand before introducing other products.
