Toy giant Mattel has unveiled a special tribute to Indian cricket star Smriti Mandhana, naming her to the first-ever global Barbie Dream Team as part of the International Women’s Day celebrations.
The initiative, announced on March 5, recognises women who have broken barriers in their respective fields with one-of-a-kind dolls created in their likeness. Representing India in the global lineup is Mandhana, whose achievements in international cricket have made her one of the most influential figures in the sport today.
Mandhana also becomes the first cricketer to receive a bespoke doll under the Barbie Dream Team banner. The doll, designed exclusively to honour her journey, reflects her sporting identity and influence both on and off the field. It will not be available for retail and has been created purely as a tribute to her legacy.
Widely regarded as one of India’s leading batters, Mandhana has played a significant role in raising the profile of women’s cricket in the country. She also made history as the first Indian woman to score centuries across all three international format, Test, One Day Internationals and T20.
For decades, cricket has been one of India’s most celebrated sports, yet women athletes often faced limited visibility and opportunities. Mandhana’s recognition through the Barbie Dream Team highlights the changing narrative around women in sport and reinforces the message that athletic ambition is not defined by gender.
The Barbie Dream Team initiative builds on the brand’s long-standing effort to spotlight women role models across industries. Since its debut in 1959, Barbie has introduced dolls representing more than 100 women who have driven social, cultural and professional change.
Alongside Mandhana, the global Barbie Dream Team includes prominent women from sports, science, music and exploration. Among them are tennis legend Serena Williams, footballer Chloe Kelly, professional surfer Stephanie Gilmore, and research astronaut Kellie Gerardi. The list also features racing driver Regina Sirvent Alvarado, German pop star Helene Fischer, and mountaineer Zoja Skubis, reflecting the diverse fields where women are shaping global conversations.
By honouring Mandhana through a one-of-a-kind doll, Barbie continues its effort to celebrate inspiring female role models while expanding the possibilities young girls imagine for themselves.

“This is incredibly special to me. Not just in India, but to be part of the Barbie Dream Team worldwide. All the women here are so inspiring, and I have grown up looking up to them. I felt very emotional because, while growing up, cricket was never the first choice for an Indian girl. I never imagined that one day there would be a one-of-a-kind Barbie made to look like me. Playing sport for India is one thing, but inspiring young girls is another- and there’s no better way to do that than through Barbie.” said Smriti Mandhana, Vice-Captain, Indian Women’s Cricket team.
“Barbie has always championed the belief that girls can be anything. From astronauts to CEOs, Barbie has broken barriers and redefined what’s possible – igniting imagination and inspiring generations of girls to dream without limits,” said Nathan Baynard, Vice President and Head of Barbie, Mattel. “This International Women’s Day, we’re proud to build on that legacy with the launch of our Barbie Dream Team, celebrating an extraordinary group of global trailblazers who are paving the way for the next generation. By honoring their achievements, we hope to inspire girls everywhere to pursue their passions boldly and realize their limitless potential.”
