Apollo Partners With ePlane Company To Bring Electric Air Ambulances To India

Apollo Hospitals has partnered with Chennai-based aerospace startup The ePlane Company to explore the deployment of India’s first electric air ambulance network, marking a significant step towards integrating electric aviation into the country’s emergency healthcare ecosystem. The collaboration, announced through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), will also assess the use of medical delivery drones to transport organs, blood products, medicines and diagnostic samples.

The partnership aims to address one of India’s biggest healthcare challenges: getting critically ill patients to advanced medical facilities within the “golden hour,” the crucial period following a traumatic injury, stroke or cardiac emergency when timely treatment can significantly improve survival rates. By combining Apollo Hospitals’ nationwide healthcare infrastructure with The ePlane Company’s electric aviation technology, the two organisations plan to build an integrated emergency response model spanning both metropolitan cities and underserved regions.

Under the proposed collaboration, The ePlane Company’s e200X electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft will be evaluated for a range of emergency medical applications, including inter-hospital patient transfers, trauma response, cardiac and stroke emergencies, and organ transportation. According to the company, the aircraft is designed to transport patients considerably faster than road ambulances while operating at a lower cost than conventional helicopters.

Alongside electric air ambulances, the initiative will also explore deploying medical delivery drones through The ePlane Company’s subsidiary, Amber Wings. These drones are expected to carry time-sensitive medical supplies including blood units, organs, vaccines, medicines and laboratory samples between hospitals and diagnostic centres, helping reduce delays in critical healthcare logistics.

The proposed network will leverage Apollo Hospitals’ extensive healthcare ecosystem, which includes hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, diagnostic centres and a fleet of more than 1,066 ambulances. As part of the agreement, Apollo Hospitals has also expressed its intention to evaluate the procurement of the e200X electric air ambulances and medical drones. The MoU further provides for the possibility of a future strategic investment by Apollo Hospitals in The ePlane Company, subject to mutually agreed terms.
