No Name Needed: Zomato Lets Orange Do The Talking In Its Birthday Wish For Swiggy

Zomato wished Swiggy a happy birthday with a clever logo-free newspaper ad, using playful copy, extending the minimalist branding playbook it used for its own 18th birthday campaign to turn their familiar rivalry into a playful marketing moment.

No Name Needed: Zomato Lets Orange Do The Talking In Its Birthday Wish For Swiggy

Zomato wished Swiggy a happy birthday without mentioning ‘Swiggy’. And somehow, everyone still knew exactly who the birthday wish was for.

The food delivery brand placed a print ad in The Times of India’s Bengaluru edition without any Swiggy logo, no direct name drop, and very little copy. Instead, it referred to Swiggy as ‘the other food delivery app’ and thanked its rival for pushing Zomato to do better.

Subtle? Not exactly.

The orange backdrop was a pretty big clue. Add Bengaluru, Swiggy’s home turf, to the mix and the dots were not particularly difficult to connect.

What could have been a straightforward birthday wish instead became a small game between the brand and the reader. Zomato provided the clues. Everyone else filled in the blank.

A Birthday Wish Without The Birthday Brand

There is something particularly Zomato about wishing your biggest rival a happy birthday while refusing to actually say its name.

The copy kept things friendly rather than turning the moment into a roast. By thanking its competitor for pushing it to do better, Zomato acknowledged a rivalry that has shaped India’s food delivery market for years, but did so with a wink rather than an elbow.

And that is what makes the creative work.

The joke does not need explaining because Zomato and Swiggy have spent years building distinctive identities in the same category. Red immediately brings one brand to mind. Orange brings another. Put the right copy against either colour and the logo starts feeling almost optional.

But Zomato has already tested that theory on itself.

Zomato Has Played The No Logo Game Before

When Zomato turned 18 this year, it celebrated with a campaign that also chose to leave something rather important out: its logo.

Instead of putting the brand name front and centre, the creative leaned on Zomato’s signature red, familiar typography and established personality. The assumption was simple. After 18 years of building the brand, people should know who is talking without needing to see a logo every time.

And they did.

That makes the Swiggy birthday creative feel less like a one-off joke and more like a continuation of the same idea.

On its own birthday, Zomato asked whether people could recognise Zomato without seeing Zomato.

For Swiggy’s birthday, it went one step further: can people recognise the competitor without Zomato naming the competitor?

Apparently, yes.

Same Trick, Different Birthday

That little flip is where the campaign gets interesting.

Zomato’s 18th birthday campaign relied on its own distinctive brand assets to make itself recognisable. The latest ad relies partly on Swiggy’s.

The orange does a lot of the talking. The food delivery reference does some more. Bengaluru adds context. Zomato’s own voice ties everything together.

By the time the reader reaches the birthday wish, there is hardly any mystery left.

It is a neat example of what happens when brands become familiar enough that their identities extend beyond logos. Colours, phrases, typography, tone and even rivalries can eventually become shortcuts in consumers’ minds.

And Zomato appears quite happy to play with those shortcuts.

BrandBeats’ Take

In a market where food delivery brands are constantly battling for attention, such playful exchanges do more than entertain. They build brand recall, keep the rivalry in public view and remind audiences that competition can sometimes be the best creative brief of all.
