Diwali celebrations often begin long before the festival itself, with homes getting a fresh coat of paint, decorations coming out of storage and families coming together to prepare for the occasion. Tapping into this familiar festive ritual, Asian Paints has unveiled its latest Diwali campaign, ‘Taiyyari Shuru, Tyohaar Shuru’, positioning the preparations as an integral part of the celebration.
Conceptualised by Ogilvy, the campaign features a musical advertising film that brings the excitement and cheerful chaos of pre-Diwali preparations to life. Rather than focusing solely on the final transformation of a home, the film celebrates the process of getting it ready, bringing together cleaning, painting, decorating and the involvement of family members.
The film opens with a mother and son unpacking decorations for the festivities. As the two break into a song, an oversized paint can bursts open, releasing dancers dressed in different paint colours. The sequence transforms the otherwise ordinary setting into a vibrant musical, with choreography, colourful interiors and festive elements taking centre stage.
Using practical effects and in-camera techniques, the film transitions from muted beige backdrops to colourful spaces featuring patterns and traditional Indian fabrics. It culminates in a musical finale with fireworks, reinforcing the campaign’s central idea that the festive mood begins with the preparations themselves.
Through the campaign, Asian Paints builds on the association between Diwali and home improvement, placing painting alongside the cleaning and decorating rituals that traditionally precede the festival.
For a paint brand, the festive season offers an opportunity to connect a functional product with a larger consumer occasion. However, the campaign shifts attention from the finished walls to the moments that lead up to the transformation. Family members, friends and relatives come together, share responsibilities and participate in getting the house ready to welcome guests.
